We were doing fine until great changes were going to happen. The worlds petruleum supply is going to run out!We only have about 2.6 trillion barrles left in the ground. And only about 1.7 trillion barrles have been found. This is called “discovered” oil.Oil that is found but has not been takin out.

But,we can pump oil out of a rock called marlstone or oil shale. But,it is hard and expensive to ge.So, oil shale must be heated to 900 degrees farenhite to get the oil out.

In 1956 M. King Hubbert thought of the concept of oil production peak.He obsuved that the petruleum climbs to a peak then declines.Once people pump out half the oil the other half get’s harder and is more expensive to get.Paul Roberts saysHubberts theroey will peak in 2030.

Drilling new oil will be harder to get. When the oil disapears people will have to go to the Caspian Sea and the frozen tundra of Siberia.Oil provides 40% of the worlds energy. The U.S is more energyefficent than the past years.Americans want bigger cars and homes.

The people who live their are called Ottomans. The Ottomans fought to make their influence greater. And the empire controlled Turkey,Syria,Palestine,Arabia, and ,Egypt. The Ottomans also conquered,in the 1400’s Constantinople. The sultans or the Turkish rulers made people pay large taxes and obey Muslim laws.

In the 1500’s, the Ottoman Empire reached the summit under he rule of Suleyman1.The social ways of life and government were turned into laws that lasted 400 years .In the middle of the 1500’s the Ottoman Empire had the Middle East, most of North Africa, and most of Europe. They were very powerful. But,after that the Arab lands were neglected.

But, when World War 1 came in 1914 they weren’t as powerful. So, they feared Zionist who were interested in the region. The Arabs wanted independence. So, when Britain promised them independence they agreed to support the British. In 1916 Britain and France concluded Sykes-Picot Agreement.Which said that Palestine ,Syria, and ,Iraq were to be divided between 2 European countries. And Palestine was the Jews homeland.

In the end, after being divided, the Ottoman Empire was gone.

For more information, read Israel In Pictures: Visual Geography series at Horace W. Porter library www.hwporter.org

Carthage is a ancient city in Tunisia. It became a trading center. The Carthaginians were in war with the romans!Harable’s army (carthaginans) were one of the greatest army’s in the world,he brought elephants & soliders acrossed the Strait of Gibralter, and through the Alps so the romans wouldn’t see them.At first the Carthaginians were wining the wars, then the romans fought back! They attacked Cartage, killed everyone, burned the city down and anyone they didn’t kill were bought and sold into slavery.

After we talked about our homework we watched a movie on Morocco. Picture of Carthage below.
The Emperor penguin is the biggest penguin. It stands 3.7 feet high and wieghs 60-90 pounds. The smallest penguin is the fariy penguin it is 16 inches high and wieghs 2.2 pounds.
Rock Hopper-6-8 inches high 5-6 pounds and has 3.5 millon pairs
Macaroni-20-24inches high 10 pounds lives in the Atlantic and Indian oceans, popullation-11,654,000 pairs incresing
Yellow-eyed-30 inches 13 pounds lives in New Zealand they have decreased by 40% in 40 years
Penguins have a great diet, krill, squid, and fish. When penguins hunt they find food within 50-60 feet of the surface. They rely on vision when hunting, they find their prey down in the depths of the ocean and in the darkness. Some hunting areas are 9 miles away from the colony. The Adelies penguins go hunting 559 miles away. When penguins have their egg they have to incubate them. All except the Emperor penguins the male and the female take turns incubating so the other one can take a break to eat. This can last for as short as 1 month or as long as 62-66 days, for the Emperor. The tempature in incubation is 96.5F when the environment is
-76F.Failure in incubation is usually because of a misunderstanding between parents. When the female doesn’t return the male leaves the nest. But,if they do survive coming out can take the chicks up to 3 days. When they come out they have down feathers, which are not waterproof so they must stay out of the water.Their parents give them alot of attention in order for them to survive. When the parents go out to get food for the chick they reconize the chick because of it’s distinctive call.Ther are 3 different calls, the contact call, the display call which is used for partners in a colony. And the last one is the threat call, used to defend territory. Some of the reasons that penguins die are because of oil spills. The oil get’s on their wings reducing the waterproof and insulation, then they suffer from hypothermya[chilling].They also die from air craft,if an air craft flys over colonies it could cause panic and stampeads!Which can lead to injuries and easy preditation.People have hunted species of penguin and taken eggs for centurries. They were used for provisions.Luckally, egg collecting was banned in 1969,but,harvesting still continues today. In the 19th and 20th centuries their skin was used for caps, slippers and purses!Their feathers were used for clothing , decorations, and mattress stuffing. And that’s just what humans do.Hunting whales, lepord seals, sea lions, sharks, and killer whales eat penguins in the water. On land foxes, snakes, wild dogs, cats, birds, stoates, sea gulls, lizards, rats, and swamp harrings eat them.Skuas may work in pairs, one distracts the penguin on the nest when the other steals the egg or chick. But,that’s just the circle of life.
